Northwest Exits MIAA Softball Tournament with 3-1 Loss to Washburn

SHAWNEE, Kan. - (L 3-1) Northwest Missouri State softball was ousted from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Tournament at the Mid-America West Sports Complex today after dropping a 3-1 decision to Washburn.

Northwest awaits the decision by the NCAA softball committee on the eight-team field for the North Central Regional, hosted by Minnesota State University, Mankato. The announcement will be made by early Monday morning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Tish Williams hit her school-record 14th home run to straight center field. Her hit came after a Washburn runner was called out leading off early from first base. Trailing 1-0, Northwest tied the score on a double from senior Linellis Santiago-Bernier in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Tristin Brown scored, as she was a pinch-runner for junior Janelle Krohn. Krohn led off with a single to center field, one of her two hits on the day.

WU pushed across two more runs for the game-winners in the seventh frame. Williams lined a single to the left side, advancer a runner to third base. An Ashley Webb RBI-single plated Jessie Batres before Webb handed the Lady Blues a 3-1 lead scoring on a single from Dani White.

The Bearcats went down in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Junior Kelly Morris fell to 12-10 on the year going 6 1/3 innings. She allowed three runs (two earned) on nine hits. Kelly Swygert bettered her pitching mark to 13-11 by earning the complete game win. She allowed nine hits and walked one batter.

Four Bearcats ended with two hits apiece.

Washburn smothered two Northwest rallies by converting two double plays, once in the first and again in the fourth.
