Bearcats Drop Two at Central Missouri

WARRENSBURG, Mo. - (L 5-1) (L 7-5) The Northwest Missouri State softball team fell twice today at Central Missouri, 5-1 and 7-5 in an MIAA doubleheader from Jennies Field. With the losses, Northwest now falls to 20-15 overall on the season and 7-7 in the league.

Northwest scored first in Game 1 on a run-scoring double by senior Sarah Johnson. But the Jennies got to Northwest starter Kelly Morris for five runs total in the middle innings to earn the victory. Morris fell to 10-7 on the year after she gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out three. The Bearcats only managed two hits in the contest.

In Game 2, Northwest quickly took a 2-0 edge after the top of the first inning on a two-run home run from Johnson, her eighth of the season. Central overcame the deficit with seven runs in the first two innings and led 7-3 going into the seventh inning. Freshman Kaila Ballard, who missed the last four games with a shoulder injury, drove in two runners with a two-out single to left field before the Jennies staved off a Bearcat rally for the doubleheader sweep.

Bearcat starter Cola Krueger dropped to 9-8 overall going just 1 2/3 innings. She gave up all seven runs on six hits.

For the day, junior Janelle Krohn had a pair of hits while Johnson went 2-for-7 with three RBIs.

Northwest is scheduled to take on Fort Hays State tomorrow (Sunday) in a make-up doubleheader to begin at 3 p.m.

NOTES: The meetings today were the first against former Northwest coach Susan Anderson who compiled a 124-96 record from 2003-06... Despite scoring first in both contests, Northwest fell to 17-4 this season when putting the game's first run on the board.
