Morris Wins First Career Weekly League Honor; 2nd Bearcat This Year

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Northwest Missouri State junior right-hander Kelly Morris (Blue Springs, Mo.) has been named the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Pitcher of the Week for April 16-22. A 5-foot-10 hurler, Morris was 3-0 with a 0.74 earned run average and two shutouts last week for the Bearcats.

She opened the week by scattering five hits, all singles, to halt the 16-game winning streak of No. 6 Emporia State and hand the Lady Hornets their first MIAA loss, 2-0, Wednesday (April 18). Morris fanned two and walked one while no ESU runner got past second base.

That was followed by a five-inning complete-game shutout of Southwest Baptist Friday (April 20). Morris gave up just four singles and struck out three in the 16-0 win.

The next day against Missouri Southern, she was tagged with her only runs and extra-base hits of the week, but limited the Lions to three hits and two earned runs. The first-inning run allowed by Morris stopped an 18-inning scoreless streak. She fanned five and walked one as the Bearcats picked up a 3-2 win. She fanned five and walked one.

It marks the first time since she opened the season 3-0 that Morris has put together three straight winning decisions. Morris leads the Bearcats (20-13, 7-5 MIAA) in wins (10), appearances (21), ERA (2.13) and strikeouts (76).

Morris is a graduate of Blue Springs High School, and transferred to Northwest from Blue River (Mo.) Community College. Morris joins sophomore Megan Simpson as Bearcats to receive a weekly honor from the MIAA offices this season.

Northwest is scheduled next to play Pittsburg State on Friday, April 27 in Warrensburg, Mo., beginning at 5 p.m.
