Bearcats Notch 2 Non-Conference Wins at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (W, 8-1) (W, 4-1) Northwest Missouri State earned two non-conference victories, 8-1 and 4-1 this afternoon versus Rockhurst (Mo.) University from Loyola Park. Northwest, who received nine votes in the latest NFCA Division II Coaches Poll (March 21), improves to 12-6 on the season.

With Northwest holding a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh inning in Game 1, the bats exploded for four runs. The first four batters reached base with sophomore Megan Simpson leading off with a single to center field. The final two runs were scored courtesy of faulty Rockhurst defense, which included two passed balls.

Senior Lindsay Stephenson ended the game 3-for-3 at the plate while Simpson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior Sarah Johnson smacked her fourth homer of the season to lead off the fourth frame.

Junior Kelly Morris notched the victory on the mound giving up one run on seven hits. She struck out nine and did not allow a walk to better her record to 5-3. Heather Robertson was chalked with the loss allowing four runs on nine base hits.

In Game 2, Northwest put up two runs in the second inning thanks to a single from Chelsea Terhune, which drove in two Bearcats. Freshman Erin Leslie added some insurance with a two-RBI single in the fourth. Sophomore Cola Krueger shut down the RU bats going the distance allowing one run on six hits. She did not allow a base hit until the fourth inning to improve to 6-3 on the year.

Terhune led the offensive attack by going 2-for-2 at the dish. Rockhurst's Erica Stone took the loss allowing four runs on five hits in four innings.

Northwest next returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 27 for an MIAA doubleheader at Missouri Western beginning at 4 p.m. This is a make-up from a washed-out date on March 20.

NOTES: Northwest is now 4-0 all-time against Rockhurst … The Bearcats have hit 25 home runs compared to six by the opposition.
