Simpson and Acebedo Named MIAA Athletes of the Week

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Announced by the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) offices yesterday (Tuesday), senior Pablo Acebedo (Barcelona, Spain) was named the MIAA Tennis Player of the Week while sophomore Megan Simpson (Blue Springs, Mo.) was the MIAA Softball Hitter of the Week.

Acebedo, a 5-11 senior, went 3-0 in No. 2 singles and 2-1 in No. 2 doubles with sophomore Daniel Usieto as No. 39 Northwest went 2-1 in last week's action.

Acebedo defeated Stefan McKinney, the nation's No. 47 singles player for No. 18 Midwestern (Texas) State, 6-2, 6-3 on March 12. He and Usieto dropped an 8-4 match in doubles action the same day for their only doubles loss last week.

Acebedo won his first conference match of the season in a 6-3, 6-2 win against Emporia State's Nathan Mai after he and Usieto defeated Ross Hougland and Kevin Schoon 8-1 in doubles.

The duo won their second doubles match in as many days, defeating Peter Hanteck and Ryan Burgdorfer of Missouri-St. Louis 8-5 on March 18. Acebedo won 6-2, 6-2 over Francis Lam in singles action to complete the week.

This award is the third of Acebedo's career. Acebedo and the Bearcats travel to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville for a match on Thursday, March 22. The men recently defeated No. 34 Southwest Baptist to improve to 6-3 on the year and 2-0 in league action.

Simpson was a big reason for the Bearcats hitting for a 5-2 record last week including a 4-1 mark at the Emporia State Tournament over the weekend. She hit four solo home runs during a five at-bat stretch in a pair of wins on Sunday at Emporia.

Simpson's second solo shot against Winona (Minn.) State was the game-winner in the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday. Later in the day, Simpson added home runs No. 6 and 7 on the year helping Northwest to a 6-0 route of Central Oklahoma.

For the week, she went 9-for-20 (.450) with 11 runs scored, seven RBIs and five homers. She had three multi-hit games including a 2-for-3 effort with three RBIs and two runs in the win vs. Central Oklahoma.

This award is the first in Simpson's career and first for a Bearcat since Linellis Santiago-Bernier was Hitter of the Week and Cola Krueger was Pitcher of the Week on April 25, 2006. Northwest is scheduled to play No. 21 Nebraska-Omaha in the home-opener on Thursday, March 22 at 2 p.m. from Bearcat Field.
