#22 Northwest Missouri State softball falls twice at Missouri Southern Tournament
JOPLIN, Mo. - (L 4-0) (L 8-0 (5) )Northwest Missouri State softball, ranked No. 22 in the latest NFCA Coaches' Poll, dropped its first games of the 2007 season with a 4-0 setback to Southern Arkansas before falling 8-0 to Oklahoma City in five innings at the Terri Zenner Memorial Classic, hosted by Missouri Southern today.
Northwest now stands at 5-2 on the season.
The Bearcats committed a season-high six errors against SAU in falling for the first time this season. Sophomore Cola Krueger was hit with the loss as she falls to 2-1 on the year. She went the distance giving up just four hits and one earned run.
The Lady Muleriders (14-10) notched the winning run in the first inning aided by two Bearcat errors. They would tack on single scores in the third and fourth frames. Northwest left 12 runners on base in the game and could muster just five base hits - three singles and two extra-base hits.
In the shortened-game loss to OCU, ranked No. 5 in NAIA, the Bearcat bats were shut down by starting pitcher Dasha Shembereva. She totaled six strikeouts and allowed just three singles. The Bearcats had their best scoring chance with two base hits in the fourth inning but senior Lindsay Stephenson was caught stealing for the second out and the rally was smothered.
OCU picked up five runs in the first two frames and posted eight total hits and went flawless on defense. Meanwhile, Northwest had three defensive miscues in the game and now has 17 errors on the year.
Junior Kelly Morris fell with the loss going 3 1/3 innings allowing seven runs, three earned, on seven hits.
Northwest next travels to Washburn on Wednesday, March 14 to open up conference play. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
