Bearcats Champion in Pool Play at Evangel Tournament; Bracket Play Begins Saturday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - (W 10-6) (W 10-2 (5)) (W 2-0) The No. 24 Northwest Missouri State softball teams opened the season 3-0 with wins in pool play at the Evangel (Mo.) Early Bird Tournament at the Killian Sports Complex in Springfield, Mo. The Bearcats were champions in Pool D, and advance to the play the winner of Pool B at 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 24, weather permitting.

The Bearcats defeated Concordia (Neb.) 10-6 to open the 2007 season. Northwest fell behind 6-0 after the top of the second inning, but were able to string together four consecutive hits to start the bottom of the second, sparked by a double from junior Janelle Krohn. The Bearcats scored eight runs in the inning to take an 8-6 lead going into the third.

Two more runs came in the fifth inning, with freshman Erin Leslie driving in two runs with a single up the middle. Sophomore pitcher Cola Krueger pitched a complete game to take the win, striking out 10 players.

Northwest took the second game in five innings against Columbia (Mo.) College 10-2. Senior Sarah Johnson recorded the first home run this season for the Bearcats in to the second inning, providing a 3-0 advantage for Northwest. The Northwest bats exploded in the fourth inning, with home runs from Leslie and sophomore Megan Simpson taking the lead to 10-2, where it would stand.

Junior Kelly Morris took the win for the Bearcats, pitching all five innings and recording five strikeouts.

The Bearcats were able to remain undefeated in a 2-0 victory over Rogers (Okla.) State. Both runs came in the third inning, provided by a double from freshman Kayla Ballard, who was driven in by a single from senior Linellis Santiago-Bernier. Santiago-Bernier later scored courtesy of a single from Leslie.

Krueger picked up her second win of the day in five innings of action. Morris entered the game in the sixth inning to pick up the save.

The Bearcats were champions in Pool D, and advance to the play the winner of Pool B at 9:00 a.m. on Feb. 24, weather permitting.
