Northwest Softball Ranked No. 24 in NFCA Preseason Poll
STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Northwest Missouri State softball team is ranked 24th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Preseason Top 25 Poll released Jan. 31. Northwest entered the poll for the first time in recorded history last season, tying for 18th in the April 18, 2006, poll.
"This is great for the team and the girls to get the respect from last year," said first-year head coach Ryan Anderson. "Hopefully, we can build on this (ranking)."
Northwest finished last season with a 40-15 record. The Bearcats finished second in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Tournament and made their first trip to the NCAA playoffs since 1984.
Emporia State sits at No. 3 as the only other MIAA representative in the poll. The Hornets lost 3-0 in the Division II Championship game last season to Lock Haven (Pa.), who was chosen as the No. 1 preseason pick.
Eight NCAA Division II head coaches representing each NCAA regions vote upon the weekly ranking. A complete list of the Top 25 ranking can be found at www.nfca.org.
The Bearcats will open the 2007 season on Feb. 17 against Lincoln (Mo.) in Jefferson City, Mo., at 12 noon, weather permitting.
