Channell Signs as First JC Transfer in 2007 Softball Recruiting Class
MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest head softball coach Susan Anderson announced the signing of Cortney Channell (Kansas City, Kan.) to an NCAA and Northwest National Letter of Intent. Channell will be a junior for the 2007 season after playing the last two years at Cowley (Kan.) County Community College.
"Cortney's versatility at third, catcher and shortstop will be a much needed asset to our team next year," said Anderson, who was the 2006 MIAA Co-Coach of the Year. "She's a very consistent hitter and is always a tough out for her opponents. We're excited about her joining our program."
Channell is a 5-4 utility player who was recognized on the 2006 All-Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division First Team at the catcher position. After playing shortstop as a freshman (due to an injury on the regular shortstop), Channell batted .405 with 36 RBIs this spring at the catcher position. As a freshman, she earned First Team All-Region VI honors as she hit .363 and compiled eight homers, 53 RBIs and 41 runs.
Channell is part of a school-record 100 victories in her two seasons and has led the team to back-to-back national tournaments for the first time ever. This year, the Lady Tigers were ranked No. 2 and finished fourth at the NJCAA Division II National Softball Championships.
As a prep at Kansas City Piper High School and under the guidance of head coach Cathy Cole, Channell batted .438 and totaled 14 doubles and 20 RBIs during her senior season. Some of her accomplishments include: all-state first team, All-K.C. Metro First Team and All-KAW Valley League First Team. At the conclusion of her high school career, she was elected to play in the Kansas-Missouri All-Star game.
Northwest finished this season with a school-best record of 40-15 and a berth in the NCAA Regionals.
