Northwest Falls 0-8 in First Round of NCAA Regionals; Faces Washburn Friday
EMPORIA, Kan. - Concordia-St. Paul pitcher Kristen Schmidt tossed a perfect-game and struck out 11 as the Golden Bears handed Northwest Missouri State an 8-0, five inning loss in the first round of the North Central Region Championships this afternoon from Turnbull Field. Only four of the 15 Northwest batters put the ball in play.
Northwest falls to 39-14 overall while Concordia moves to 40-15 and plays No. 2 Emporia State in the winners round on Friday.
Schmidt, who went 1-for-2 at the plate, hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning to get the scoring started. Kristin Linell hit her 11th homer of the season, a two-run drive in the third, to put the Golden Bears up 3-0. That home run allowed by Northwest pitching was the first in 13 games.
CSP added five more runs on two homers and two run-producing singles.
Meanwhile, Schmidt was dominating fanning the first eight batters she faced. Junior Linellis Santiago popped up to third base in the third inning to halt that streak.
Freshman Cola Krueger was hit with the loss as she allowed one run on three hits. She was replaced to start the second by sophomore Lauren Lakebrink. Two other Bearcat pitchers saw action.
Northwest will face Washburn in the loser's bracket on Friday at 12:30 p.m. The Lady Blues lost to Emporia State 9-0 in five innings in the final game today.
