Softball Tied for Fifth in Region; Receives Votes in NFCA Top 25

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest Missouri State softball tied for fifth in the North Central Region rankings and received 12 votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 Poll, announced yesterday by the respective organizations. Northwest, who is coming off its first conference sweep of Truman State since 1996 with 1-0 shut outs on Tuesday, is tied with St. Cloud State for the fifth spot in the region. The top eight teams in the region advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Northwest received 12 votes in the NFCA list, the most of any team in the "others receiving" category. The Bearcats were recognized at No. 18 in the April 5 edition of the Top 25, the first national ranking in reported school history. Emporia State (2nd) and Washburn (22nd) are the other MIAA representatives in the Top 25.

The Bearcats head to Pittsburg, Kan., for a league doubleheader against the Gorillas on Friday at 4 p.m. before a 12 p.m. twinbill at Missouri Southern on Saturday. Northwest stands 31-11 overall and are third in the league standings with a 8-4 mark. The Bearcats are chasing the school-record 34 wins set last year.
