Northwest Drops Two in Day 1 of NW Classic

MARYVILLE, Mo. - (L, 4-0 vs. MSU) (L, 3-0 vs. WU) For the first time this season, Northwest Missouri State softball was shut out in back-to-back games dropping nonconference affairs, 4-0 to Minnesota State and 3-0 to Washburn on Day 1 of the Northwest Classic at Bearcat Field. Northwest could only muster seven hits in the two games.

Northwest falls to 28-10 overall on the year.

Against Minnesota State, the Mavericks picked up a single run in the fourth before plating three in the sixth thanks to two hits, one Bearcat error and four walks. Two of the MSU runs were pushed across on bases-loaded walks in the sixth. Sophomore Lauren Lakebrink suffered her first loss in her last seven decisions as she fell to 6-3 overall. She went 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs (3 earned) and she struck out eight batters. MSU's Janet Barker twirled the complete game two-hitter as she fanned nine Bearcats.

Washburn picked up the game-winning run in the first frame on a Brooke DeVader RBI single. WU then tacked on two more on back-to-back homers from Dani White and DeVader in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Kelly Swygert silenced the Bearcat bats giving up five hits in seven innings. Freshman Cola Krueger fell to 9-2 on the year going five-plus innings. She gave up three runs and one walk to go along with four K's. Junior Linellis Santiago posted a 2-for-3 effort at the plate to lead Northwest.

The Classic will wrap up tomorrow (Saturday) with Northwest hosting Upper Iowa at 11:30 a.m. and finishing up with #3 Emporia State at 1:30 p.m. These games will serve as the final home contests of 2006 and will be Senior Day for Katy John and Ashley Pride.

NOTES: The consecutive shut outs against Northwest were the first since dropping three straight when scoring no runs against Emporia State and North Dakota from March 29 - April 2 ... Northwest falls to 1-1 against MSU and 1-2 versus Washburn this season ... MSU was ranked sixth in the North Central Region while WU was third ... Northwest was the visiting team on the scoreboard in both games.
