John Earns Second Team All-Region Honors

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Northwest Missouri State junior secondbaseman Katy John (Blue Springs, Mo.) received 2005 Second Team Louiville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II All-North Central Region Team accolades, announced today by the coaches organization. The North Central Region is comprised of teams from the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), North Central Conference (NCC) and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).

"She had a breakout year by far," said head coach Susan Anderson. "It really shows that her hard work from this spring has paid off. I think she is very deserving and very happy for her."

Setting the school record for single-season stolen bases with 33, John was second in the MIAA with 0.54 steals per game. John was the Bearcats top hitter as she started in all of a possible 61 games at second base. She was first in batting average (.312), hits (64), runs (40), walks (16) and on-base percentage (.367). Against Minnesota-Duluth on Mar. 22, she set the single-game record with four stolen bases.

John tied for first on the team with 17 multiple-hit games including a career-best 4-for-5 effort versus Southwest Baptist (Apr. 30). In the first 10 games of the season, John was red-hot hitting safely in nine contests including a five-game hit streak. During that stretch, she batted 12-of-29 (.414).

She holds the Northwest season marks for games played (61), at-bats (205) and runs scored. She currently needs four more stolen bases in her career to catch Kendra Smith's mark of 47. The season hits mark (64) is the most for a Bearcat since Kendra Smith had 83 in 2000.

The MIAA was represented with 17 players including eight on the First Team and nine on the Second Team. A total of eight regions were represented. A complete listing of all the honors can be viewed at

Northwest ended its season tying the school record for wins at 34-27 overall. It earned the No. 8 seed for the MIAA Tournament and split two games before bowing out in the second round.
