Northwest Falls Twice versus Pittsburg State

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State softball team fell twice to Pittsburg State today, 3-1 and 6-2, at Bearcat Field. With an RBI in Game 2, junior Ashley Pride tied the school's single-season record for RBIs with 38 - Angie McCoy tallied the same in 2002.

Northwest drops to 29-22 on the season and 6-8 in the MIAA. Pittsburg State, who swept No. 16 Missouri Western yesterday, improves to 34-24 on the year and 12-6 in league play.

In the first game, Northwest tied the score up at 1-1 in the third off a run-producing single by sophomore Linellis Santiago. She drove in junior Katy John, who reached on a fielder's choice. From there, the Bearcat bats were held in check by PSU hurler Anna Bott. She gave up one earned run on four hits while striking out five in seven innings of work. Senior Shelly MacDonald dropped to 15-6 on the year as she allowed three earned runs on nine hits and she fanned two.

The Gorillas notched the winning runs in the fourth inning.

Junior Jaclyn Brown posted a single and a double in three plate appearnces to lead the 'Cats offensively.

Northwest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2. John hit an RBI infield-single, which plated sophomore Kaytee Schulenberg. Then, Pride picked up her milestone RBI on a bases-loaded walk. PSU tied the count up with two in the top of the third frame and took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth. One more run in the seventh closed out the scoring for the Gorillas.

The Bearcats notched seven hits compared to 10 by Pitt State. Sophomore Talina Canon got hit with the loss as she went six innings to fall to 4-5 on the year. She allowed six runs, one earned, on 10 hits and she struck out one batter. Senior Kelly Hainline pitched a scoreless seventh inning. JoAnna Brozovich earned the win for the Gorillas as she went the full seven innings.

Redshirt freshman Janelle Krohn, junior Sarah Johnson and Schulenberg each rapped out two hits in the contest.

The Bearcats travel to Missouri Western on Thursday, Apr. 28 for a rescheduled doubleheader. First pitch from St. Joseph is set for 4:30 p.m.
