Northwest Goes 1-2 on Sunday at home ClassicMARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State softball (26-19) team took down South Dakota 1-0 before falling 7-4 to Augustana and 5-0 to No. 18 Missouri Western today at the Northwest Classic. The Bearcats finished the tournament with a 2-3 record.
The first game against South Dakota saw both teams go scoreless into the seventh inning. Sophomore Tami Phillips reached second base on a fielding error by the leftfielder. Then, junior Katy John drove her home with a game-winning double to right-center field for the win. Freshman Lauren Lakebrink notched her first career complete-game shutout and moved to 2-5 on the season. Lakebrink gave up three three singles and fanned three Coyotes. John and sophomore Sarah Johnson each went 2-for-3 from the plate.
In the 7-4 loss to Augustana in Game 2, Northwest sophomore Jaclyn Brown bashed a three-run homer to left in the bottom of the fifth frame. That play gave the Bearcats a 4-3 edge. However, AC plated four runs on four hits with the help of one error in the top of the seventh to snatch the win. Senior Shelly MacDonald dropped her mark to 14-5 on the year going six innings on the hill. She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits as she struck out three. Brown ended the contest 3-for-3 from the dish with three RBIs.
Missouri Western scored four times in the first two innings and never looked back in the third game. The Griffons added one more in the sixth inning. MWSC hurler Dana Wertz went five innings in the win giving up just four base hits. Senior Kelly Hainline took the loss in four innings of work. She gave up four earned runs on five hits. Freshman Crystal Gustin was 2-for-3 on the offensive side with two singles.
The 'Cats are scheduled to play a conference doubleheader with Central Missouri on Monday, Apr. 18. First pitch from Bearcat Field is set for 2:30 p.m.
