Bearcats Split in Day 1 of Northwest Classic
MARYVILLE, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State (25-17) softball team picked up one win against Missouri-Rolla (25-18) 7-0 after a 8-3 loss to Minnesota State (20-21) today at the Northwest Classic.
Against MSU, both teams plated a run in the first inning before the Bearcats notched single runs in the third and fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Minnesota State took back the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth. All three runs were unearned with the aid of two errors.
The Mavericks tacked on four more in the top of the seventh on four hits.
Senior Kelly Hainline was hit with the loss to drop to 3-4 on the year. She yielded four unearned runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work. Junior Jaclyn Brown went 2-for-3 from the dish with one RBI. The Bearcats finished with six hits and five errors compared to nine hits and one error for MSU.
In the second game versus UM-Rolla, senior pitcher Talina Canon moved her record to 4-3 and lowered her team-leading ERA to 0.45 with the complete game shutout. She allowed just three hits and struck out two.
The 'Cats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Ashley Pride knocked in junior Katy John on a double. Freshman Janelle Krohn singled home Pride before the third run came across on a wild pitch.
Northwest opened up the game with four more in the fifth, which was highlighted by a 2-RBI double by freshman Crystal Gustin. Pride finished 3-for-3 in the game with 2 RBIs while Brown had two hits.
Northwest continues play at the Northwest Classic tomorrow with three more games. The Bearcats begin with South Dakota at 12:30 p.m. followed by Augustana at 2:30 and Missouri Western at 4:30 p.m. All games take place at Bearcat Field.
