Northwest Takes Two at Lincoln University

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Northwest Missouri State (24-15) softball team moved to 28-0 all-time versus Lincoln University with two shutouts today, 4-0 and 6-0 behind the arms of senior Shelly MacDonald and sophomore Talina Canon.

MacDonald picked up her career-high 14th win of the season, a 77-pitch complete game shutout, as she allowed three hits and no walks in Game 1. The Bearcats got all the offense they would need in the third inning. Junior Katy John notched her first triple of 2005 and was bunted in by sophomore Linellis Santiago. Junior Ashley Pride, who went 3-for-4 in the contest, rapped a three-RBI double in the seventh. She leads the club with 26 RBIs on the season.

John and sophomore Tami Phillips each had two hits. MacDonald allowed one baserunner to reach past first base on a first-inning double.

In Game 2, Canon went seven innings to move to 3-3 on the year. She gave up four hits and struck out three for her second 2005 shutout. Northwest notched an unearned run in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Jaclyn Brown, who was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, opened up the inning with a single. She scored off an error by the rightfielder.

The 'Cats broke the game open in the sixth inning with five runs after two outs. Sophomore Janelle Krohn cleared the pads on a double to left center. Phillips and freshman Megan Stalder picked up RBI singles as well.

The team-leader in ERA at 0.53, Canon faced less than five batters in six of seven innings. Lincoln put runners on second and third in the seventh before a liner to Pride at third capped the doubleheader sweep.

The Bearcats will host the Northwest Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Maryville, Mo. Northwest plays five games over the weekend starting with Minnesota State at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
