Bearcats Drop Two at Missouri-RollaROLLA, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State softball team fell this afternoon at Missouri-Rolla by counts of 3-1 and 2-0. The twinbill marked the final time that the two teams do battle in regular season MIAA action - UM-Rolla leaves the MIAA for the Great Lakes Athletic Conference starting in 2005-06. The Bearcats fall to 22-15 overall and 3-4 in the league. UM-Rolla improves to 23-17 on the year and 7-5 in the MIAA.
In Game 1, UM-Rolla pitcher Candice Wilburn allowed one hit, on an infield single by junior Katy John in the sixth inning, and gave up one unearned run. She fanned four Bearcats in seven innings of work. Senior Shelly MacDonald got hit with the loss to fall to 13-4 on the season. She pitched four innings giving up two earned runs on five hits. Senior Talina Canon worked two innings of relief and gave up one earned run with no hits.
The Bearcats plated the game's first run as sophomore Linellis Santiago scored on an error by the shortstop. The Lady Miners notched single runs in the first, third and fifth frames.
Lady Miner pitcher Renne Roberts blanked Northwest in Game 2 on six hits. She did not allow a walk and struck out two. Freshman Lauren Lakebrink fell to 1-4 on the season going all six innings. She gave up two runs, one earned, on just four hits.
UM-R catcher Ashley Weiss homered down the left field line in the second to score both runs. Northwest held a 6-4 hits advantage but left nine runners on base.
Sophomore Tami Phillips went 2-for-2 in Game 2 while four others had one hit. John added to her school stolen base record with her 23rd on the season.
The Bearcats come back home to begin a non-league doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha on Monday at 2:30 p.m.
