Northwest Blanks Wayne & UM-Duluth on Day 2 of UN-Omaha Tourn.
OMAHA, Neb. - The Northwest Missouri State softball picked up two shutouts at the Nebraska-Omaha Tournament today with a 1-0 defeat over Wayne (Neb.) State and 5-0 blanking of Minnesota Duluth. Game 1 was due to a complete-game four-hit shutout by senior Jacqui Handlos and senior Shelly MacDonald moved to 12-3 on the year after a five-hit complete game gem over UM-Duluth. Junior Katy John tied the Northwest single-season steals record with her 20th of the season in the early contest. She stands tied with Kendra Smith's mark in 1997.
Northwest, who moved to 20-13 on the season and has won as many games as 2004, will get back into MIAA action with a flurry of road games on Wednesday, Apr. 6 at 4:00 p.m. in St. Joseph, Mo.
Handlos, who moved to 3-1 on the season and lowered her ERA to 3.09, struck out a season-high seven batters while she walked three versus Wayne State. She got all the run support she would need on a run-scoring double by sophomore Jaclyn Brown in the sixth inning. Sophomore Linellis Santiago, who reached on an inning-opening single in the sixth, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Ashley Pride before she scored.
John went 3-for-3 with three singles as she went for her team-leading 11th multiple-hit game of the season. Brown finished 2-for-3 with the RBI.
Brown kept up her hot hitting smacking her second homerun of 2005 in the first inning against UM-Duluth, a two-run bomb to left-center to score Pride. In the fifth frame, Northwest tacked on two more runs on a successful squeeze play by sophomore Tami Phillips, which scored Santiago, and on a wild pitch, which plated Pride.
John drove home freshman Megan Stalder with a two-out RBI single in the sixth to give Northwest a 5-0 lead. Brown, Pride, Santiago and junior Kaytee Schulenberg all compiled two hits apiece. MacDonald struck out six batters and allowed only one walk.
