Northwest Splits Doubleheader at Rebel Spring Games vs. Minnesota-Duluth
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Northwest Missouri State (15-9) softball team battled the University of Minnesota Duluth twice today at the Rebel Spring Games and won the first 3-0 before falling 3-1 in the second game.
In the first game, junior Katy John, who went 3-for-3 with four stolen bases, led off the game with a single. She set the tone as she would reach base as the lead-off hitter her first three trips to the plate. Her first run came via a double steal with junior Ashley Pride. John plated her second run in the third inning off a fielding error by the shortstop. Finally, the Bearcats took a 3-0 lead after John scored on a squeeze bunt by Pride.
Senior pitcher Shelly MacDonald moved to 8-2 on the year as she worked 6.2 innings allowing eight hits and fanning two batters. MacDonald notched her third combined shutout and lowered her season earned run average to 1.08. Sophomore Talina Canon earned her third save of the season facing two batters in the bottom of the seventh frame and getting one out.
Pride ended the game with two RBI and sophomore Sarah Johnson was 2-for-3.
The Bulldogs, who left 10 runners on base, had eight hits overall with two batters each rapping two apiece.
The second game was a pitchers duel between freshman Lauren Lakebrink and UMD hurler Britt Hansen. Both players went into the sixth inning with a shutout - entering the sixth, Lakebrink allowed three hits and Hansen one.
The bats came alive in the sixth frame as the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the top-half of the inning on two singles and a walk. However, Canon came on to record the final out and extinguish the scoring threat.
In the bottom of the sixth, John reached on a bunt single to start things off and advanced to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Linellis Santiago, her fourth of the day. After a walk by sophomore Kaytee Shulenberg loaded the bases, a wild pitch plated John and gave the 'Cats a 1-0 edge.
UM-Duluth took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh tallying three runs on three base hits with the help of two Bearcat errors.
Canon got hit with the loss as she dropped to 2-2 on the season. Hansen allowed just one run on two base hits as she struck out eight Bearcats in the win. UM-Duluth totaled eight base hits in the contest.
Offensively, John and Pride each singled for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats wrap up competition at the Rebel Spring Games with two games tomorrow (Wednesday) versus West Virginia Wesleyan and Colorado-Colorado Springs. First pitch against WVWU is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. CST with the second contest starting at 1:20 p.m.
