Bearcats Winless After One Day at Rebel Spring Games
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Northwest Missouri State (13-7) softball team opened up the Rebel Spring Games today by dropping a 3-2 nine-inning game against St. Xavier (Ill.) before a 7-0 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside.
In Game 1, St. Xavier's M. Stluka drove home R. Minas for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Both teams traded runs in the eighth frame before Northwest was silenced offensively in the top of the ninth.
Northwest plated the game's first run on a RBI single by sophomore Linellis Santiago in the second inning. She drove in pinch runner senior Jacqui Handlos who entered after sophomore Sarah Johnson doubled with one out. St. Xavier answered in the bottom of the second with a lone run.
Senior hurler Kelly Hainline went 8.2 innings on the hill allowing just one earned run on seven base hits.
The Bearcat defense committed three errors. St. Xavier pitcher K. Garner was credited with the win allowing two runs on six hits in nine innings of work.
Six Bearcats posted a hit against St. Xavier.
In Game 2, UW-Parkside plated as many runs as it needed in the first inning. After the first two runners reached base, the clean-up batter Mel Strohbusch rapped a double to score both runners. UW-P would score once more in the second and fourth frames and three times in the seventh.
UW-P pitcher Meagan Shimkus scattered two hits in seven innings of work. She sent the 'Cat hitters down in order in four innings. Senior pitcher Shelly MacDonald was hit with just her second loss of the
year (6-2) as she allowed four earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work.
Northwest will take on Augustana (S.D.) and Missouri-St. Louis tomorrow at the Rebel Spring Games.
The first game is scheduled for 9:40 a.m. CST with the second one slated for 1:20 p.m. The Bearcats defeated UM-St. Louis 1-0 on Feb. 26 at the Evangel Tournament.
