Bearcats Go 1-1 In Missouri Western Tournament

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Shelly MacDonald at Day 1 of the Missouri Western Tournament today. The hurler moved to a perfect 3-0 on the season and held her ERA to 0.00 with a 2-0 blanking of Truman State in Game 2. The Bearcats dropped a 8-0 decision in 6 innings to Nebraska-Omaha in the first game - it was the fifth straight UNO win over Northwest.

In Game 1, the Bearcats could not generate any offense against UN-Omaha pitcher Jenny Pritchard. On the flip side, the Mavericks plated at least one run in every inning. Northwest compiled four total hits off Pritchard with sophomore Tami Phillips going 2x2 at the plate. Senior Kelly Hainline was hit with the loss as she went 3.0 innings and allowed four runs (3 earned) on six hits.

Extending her season-opening scoreless streak to 20.0 innings, MacDonald was superb against Truman State. MacDonald sent down the Bulldog batters in order in the first four innings. She gave up a total of three singles including a lead-off hit in the seventh frame. However, the runner was stranded at third after a sacrifice bunt, a groundout to second base and a liner to third.

The 'Cats were blanked until the sixth inning when junior Ashley Pride was squeezed home by freshman Janelle Krohn. Sophomore Jaclyn Brown, who knocked a double down the right-field line, was driven in by a Kaytee Schulenberg single to put an insurance run on the board. The Northwest defense held in the bottom of the frame and snapped a four-game skid against Truman State. Junior Katy John ended the game with two hits.

Northwest stands 5-2 on the year and will play three times tomorrow (Sunday) to wrap up action at the Missouri Western Tournament. The 'Cats first face No. 19 Emporia State at 9 a.m. and will follow with Missouri Southern at 1 p.m. and No. 16 Missouri Western at 3 p.m.
