Softball Goes 3-0 at Evangel Tourn. to Begin Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Northwest Missouri State softball team opened up 2005 play with three wins at the Evangel Tournament today. Game one's win came against Concordia (Neb.), 7-0 before a 10-2 five-inning romp of Spring Arbor (Mich.). The final victory was a 4-1 decision versus Lindenwood (Mo.). The 3-0 start to the campaign is the first such accomplishment since the 1993 season.

"I am extremely pleased with how we did in the first day," said head coach Susan Anderson. "I couldn't be more happy. The pitchers did a phenomenal job and we had some awesome defensive plays. I know we had two double plays and might have had three. Offensively, a lot of players had RBI and performed very well."

In the early game, senior Shelly MacDonald picked up her 28th career win by going the distance in the blanking of Concordia. The right-hander struck out eight batters and only allowed four hits while walking none. Against Spring Arbor, senior Kelly Hainline gave up two runs on five hits in five innings in garnering the victory. She fanned three and did not allow a free pass. Senior Jacqui Handlos picked up the third win going five innings and giving up the one earned run. She allowed only three hits and struck out two. Sophomore Talina Canon earned the save with two strikeouts in the final two innings of work.

At the plate for the day, junior Ashley Pride whalloped a homerun compiling five RBI including one triple and three runs scored. Sophomore Jaclyn Brown hit a roundtripper in her second game as a Bearcat and also posted three RBI. Sophomore Linellis Santiago went 5x9 with three runs, three RBI and one double. Junior Katy John compiled three hits, had three walks and scored three times. Overall, five players had multiple RBI games.

Northwest, who improved to 14-17 all-time in season-openers, will await the winner of Missouri-St. Louis/Central Methodist tomorrow at 2:15 p.m. The Bearcats hold the No. 1 seed in bracket play and received a first round bye in Day 2. If Northwest wins at 2:15, it will be in the Championship at 4:00 p.m.
