Northwest Pitching/Catching Clinic Set for Jan. 30

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- Northwest Missouri State University softball head coach Susan Anderson announced that Marvin Murphy and Teresa Wilson will appear at the Northwest Pitching Clinic Sunday, Jan. 30 in conjunction with the Catching Clinic. Murphy, who mentored Wilson during her All-America career at Missouri, has been a pitching coach and instructor for more than 40 years in the Midwest. Wilson, who currently is the head coach at Texas Tech University, led three Division I programs to 12 NCAA Tournament appearances and the University of Washington to the NCAA College World Series in 1996 and 2000.

Very much a local influence in northwest Missouri, Murphy was a coach at North Nodaway High School where he led that program to a 1A-2A State Championship in 1985. He also served as pitching coach at Northwest from 1980-81 and instructed Tarkio College All-America pitcher DeOnne Sederburg. A 1956 graduate of Northwest, Murphy was a three-year baseball letterwinner for the 'Cats and also played one year of tennis. Murphy will be inducted into the Missouri ASA Softball Hall of Fame in mid-February.

Wilson is a 17-year coaching veteran at the Division I level where she has earned various honors including 1989 NCAA National Coach of the Year at the University of Oregon and 1991 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the University of Minnesota to a conference championship that season. After her stint at Minnesota, Wilson posted 532 wins at Washington, led her club to two Pac-10 titles and 10 straight NCAA Tournament bids. In addition to college coaching duties, Wilson was a member of the USA Softball coaching staff for six years. During her tenure there, USA Softball won the 1998 World Championships in Japan and took the silver medal at the 1999 Junior World Championships in Taiwan.

The first session on Sunday is for beginners. It will begin with check-in at 8:30 a.m. at Bearcat Arena with a 9:00-11:00 a.m. clinic to follow. Cost is $45 per camper. The second clinic for the intermediate/advanced group costs $50 with check-in at 12:30 p.m. The session is scheduled from 1:00-3:30 p.m. Participants for both sessions are encouraged to bring a person to catch with.
