Bearcats Take Down Hornets 4-1
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team defeated Emporia State 4-1 Friday on a day where the result of the game may not have been as important as what the game stood for.
On Friday, the Bearcats partnered with St. Francis Hospital to help create awareness and education for breast cancer. The event was part of the national NCAA campaign "Kick for the Cure," as the team wore custom pink jerseys in support of the event.
Northwest honored a few select friends and family of Bearcat soccer players during halftime while also showing support for survivors and those still fighting breast cancer all over the world.
When it came to in-game action, Northwest showed up ready to go in the first half.
Anna Calgaard got her team on the board early as she took a corner kick from Jordan Albright and put it in the back of the net in the second minute of the game to go up 1-0.
Albright grabbed her second assist of the game with a brilliant pass into Anna Holden who notched her third goal of the season during the 19th minute.
The Bearcats carried a 2-0 lead toward the end of the first half when Ashley Cole scored her first career goal at Northwest in the 43rd minute to go up 3-0.
Albright was still in the giving mood in the second half as she tallied her third assist in the game with a pass to Crystal McElhose in the 53rd minute to mark the second time this season Northwest has scored four or more goals.
Kelsey Adam grabbed seven saves allowing only one goal which came in the 67th minute of the contest as the Bearcats earned the 4-1 victory over ESU.
Northwest moves to 4-6-1 on the season and 2-3 in MIAA competition. Head coach Tracy Hoza’s team will head to Topeka, Kan. to take on Washburn (5-5-1, 2-2-1) Sunday with kickoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
