Bearcats Take Season Opener 8-1
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team scored early and often grabbing an 8-1 victory over Wayne State Thursday to open the 2013 season.
The Bearcats hit the back of the net in just over one minute into the game as Fiona Moloney headed in a ball from Anna Calgaard. Calgaard grabbed her second assist two minutes later with a stellar pass to Elisabeth Lee who knocked it in to put her team up 2-0.
Elizabeth Walde put her first goal of the season in the net right before the end of the first half off a brilliant cross from Alyssa Stiens as the Bearcats went up 3-0 going into halftime.
Cassie Phillips started the second half off with a header in the 45th minute with an assist by Katelynn Lindsey.
Anna Holden, Jordan Albright and Crystal McElhose all put in unassisted goals in the second half.
Anna Calgaard totaled four points in the season opener as she added a goal in the 59th minute to go along with her two previous assists.
Macy Hagen scored the Wildcats lone goal in the 53rd minute to stave off the shutout.
Northwest attempted 24 total shots compared to WSU who managed 10 in the game. Kelsey Adams earned the win in goal for the Bearcats grabbing three saves in the victory.
“Our players came out on fire,” Said Head Coach Tracy Hoza. “I think they were hungry, they’ve been hungry all camp and executed very well today.”
The Bearcats will be right back at it as they play host to Northern State Sunday on Bearcat Pitch with kickoff scheduled for 2 pm.
