Soccer welcomes warmer weather
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team hits spring workouts after making their second consecutive trip to the MIAA tournament in 2012. It is the offseason for fall sports, but Head Coach Tracy Hoza’s team is on the field preparing for the 2013 season.
“We are returning a big group, but most of them are underclassmen,” said Coach Hoza about offseason workouts. “It is very beneficial to get everyone practicing together and working toward being more successful in the conference.”
The Bearcats will face outside competition from junior colleges and NCAA institutions this spring as well as practices and training with the strength and conditioning aspect of the sport.
“We have never had this many players in spring practice,” Hoza Said. “We can actually play 11 on 11 in practice, which is huge for our team.”
This Sunday Northwest will host Soccer Fest on Bearcat Pitch starting at 9 a.m. Soccer Fest not only involves the Northwest campus but the city of Maryville. There will be an 8 v 8 tournament with several different teams participating from around the area. Club teams, students and even professors will play in the event.
“One thing we are really proud of that we started it last year is, Cats Appreciating Teacher Services,” said Hoza. “Each of the athletes on the soccer team will invite a professor to practice along with their families to watch the team and enjoy a pizza party afterward.”
The Bearcats will finish up the spring season with the alumni game April 20. Northwest will be returning 21 players along with six newcomers for the 2013 season.
