Senior day spoiled by Lions
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team suffered a tough loss Sunday to Missouri Southern 1-0 on the final day of the regular season.
Before the start of the game Northwest honored seniors Amanda Bundrant and Shalynn Durham, who were playing in their final home game of the regular season.
Neither team could take advantage of opportunities in the first half as Northwest outshot Missouri Southern 11-5 but went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0.
The second half was a battle of possession with both teams fighting hard to get the open shot they desperately needed but just could not find it. Regulation ended in a scoreless tie sending the regular season finale into overtime.
The match turned out to be the sixth overtime game of the season for the Bearcats.
In the first overtime period the Lions were unable to get off a shot as the defense held strong for the Bearcats. At the same time Northwest was unable to find the back of the net sending the match into a second overtime period.
Missouri Southern got a ball passed the Bearcat defense and ended the game with a goal in the 106th minute to steal the win.
The loss makes the Bearcats 8-6-3, 6-4-2 for the 2012 season and end the season fifth in the MIAA standings. Northwest will head to Northeastern State (12-4-1, 7-4-1) Tuesday for the first round of the MIAA tournament with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
