Season finale is key heading into the postseason
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team will finish the regular season against Missouri Southern 1 p.m. Sunday at Bearcat Pitch.
Northwest has secured a spot in next weekend’s postseason tournament, however a variety of scenarios wait over the final weekend of play as to where the Bearcats will finish.
“The third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots in the tournament are all still up for grabs depending on what everyone does this weekend,” Said Head Coach Tracy Hoza. “We could find ourselves in third place or sixth place.”
What the Bearcats do know is if they win they will host the first round of the MIAA tournament Tuesday, Oct. 30.
The 2012 MIAA Postseason Tournament works as follows: The top eight teams in the MIAA standings earn a berth. From there the top four teams host the bottom four teams with the highest remaining seed playing as host for the semifinals and championship match.
Coach Hoza said about the match this weekend, “Our games with Missouri Southern are typically close and we seem to always match up well against them.”
Since 2002 Northwest has met up with Missouri Southern 20 times as the series stands at 9-9-2. All but eight games have been decided by one goal or less with five of those games being decided in overtime.
Sunday is also a big day for seniors Amanda Bundrant and Shaylynn Durham. It will be their final home game at Bearcat Pitch as the pair will also be honored before the game.
“With a lot still on the line it makes for a very exciting final game of the season,” Coach Hoza said when asked about everything at stake Sunday.
The match between Northwest and Missouri Southern Sunday is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m.
