Bearcats beat Washburn with last minute goal
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team put in a last minute goal to beat Washburn 1-0 at Bearcat Pitch on Sunday.
The Bearcats and Lady Blues were unable to capitalize on offense in the first half. Northwest managed eight shots while Washburn put up five.
It was an intense second half as the crowd saw two yellow cards and one red card, both cards going against Washburn.
It was a hard fought match that came down to the wire. With 1:35 left to go in regulation the Bearcats broke the tie.
Anna Holden put the ball in the back of the net with an assist from Fiona Moloney. For Holden it was her second goal of the season.
Northwest also put up their second shutout of the week. Goalie Kelsey Adams had five saves in the game.
“The girls were persistent on defense as well as attacking, that was the difference,” said Head Coach Tracy Hoza. “Jordan Albright had a great game in the backline and had a lot to do with the shutout as well as the entire defense.”
Northwest is now 7-3-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in MIAA play.
The Bearcats will be on the road this week as they take on Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday with a 7 p.m. kick. Then on Saturday, Northwest will be at Fort Hays State with an early kickoff slated for 11 a.m.
