Bearcats host Huskies and Jets to open season
MARYVILLE, Mo. – The pitch will be alive and well this weekend as the Northwest Missouri State women’s soccer team charges onto the grass for the 2012 season opener.
A pair of home matches dots the Bearcats’ opening weekend schedule as they host St. Cloud State Friday with a 2 p.m. kick. On Sunday Northwest hosts Newman (Kan.) as kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
The Huskies enter the 2012 season with all four of their top scorers returning from last year’s team that posted a record of 11-8-2. The team was picked fourth in the 2012 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coaches' preseason poll. Midfielder Mary Morhardt and forward Kenzie Hanzlick were selected as preseason “Players to Watch” in the NSIC.
Newman comes into Maryville looking to open a new season as well after posting a record of 5-8-4 in 2011. The Jets played Northwest to a 2-2 tie last year in an early season nonconference match. The Jets return top scorer, senior Alli Zingo. Newman also boasts a roster with seven seniors, three juniors, five sophomores and eight freshmen.
The Bearcats look to hit the ground running as they take steps forward from last year’s season that ended with a record of 10-7-2 and a MIAA postseason tournament berth.
Northwest returns its second leading from last season in junior Victoria Von Mende. There are 12 returners in all, seven of which will start for a second straight year. Goalkeeper Kelsey Adams looks to build on a successful season last year after piling up 111 saves in 2011.
Head Coach Tracy Hoza enters her 10th season with the Bearcats and is excited to get the season going.
“It has been a long offseason and we’ve seen a lot of hard work from the girls,” Hoza said. “Fans will see a lot of new faces on the pitch along with some familiar ones. Their desire to come out and compete each day has been really encouraging and something we can build on.”
The Bearcats captains for 2012 include: senior Amanda Bundrant and juniors Anna Calgaard, Jordan Albright and Adams.
