Northwest downs Washburn
TOPEKA, Kansas - Northwest Missouri State University soccer team needed all ninety minutes Saturday night, but they were able to down the Washburn Lady Blues 2-1. The win doubled last season's win total for the Bearcats.
The Bearcats improved to 6-3-2, 3-1 MIAA after being blanked by Truman State 0-2 Thursday. With the loss, the Washburn Lady Blues fell to 1-9-2, 1-2-1 MIAA.
The Lady Blues struck first in the 27th minute when Caysie Beetley headed the ball in past Northwest goalkeeper Kelsey Adams. It was Beetley's second goal of the season and the only goal of the half.
The first half showed strong defense by both teams with only a combined six shots being allowed with four of those being attempted shots-on-goal.
Northwest went on the attack in the second half outshooting Washburn 9-2. Victoria Von Mende struck first for the Bearcats when she found the net for the ninth time this season in the 77th minute. Fiona Maloney would put the game away for the Bearcats in the 87th minute when she scored her second goal of the season off of an assist from Elizabeth Walde to put Northwest ahead 2-1. It was Walde's first assist of the season.
Washburn had three corner kicks in the contest while the Bearcats had six. Both teams committed eight fouls in the game. Adams recorded three saves in the win for Northwest. Tori Fuglister recorded six saves for the Lady Blues.
Up Next: The Bearcats continue MIAA play Tuesday, Oct. 11 when they travel to St Joseph, Mo. to face conference rival Missouri Western (3-6-0, 0-3-0 MIAA). Overall Northwest is 8-2-3 when facing Missouri Western and is 3-1-2 when facing the Griffons in St. Joseph. Last season the Bearcats went 1-1-1 when facing Missouri Western. Kick-off from SC-Spratt Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
