Northwest rebounds to beat Southwest Baptist
BOLIVAR, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State trailed 1-0 less than five minutes into its game against Southwest Baptist but rebounded to earn a 2-1 victory in the Battle of the Bearcats Thursday at SBU Soccer Pitch.
It is the first come-from-behind victory of the season for Northwest (3-9-4, 3-8-3 MIAA) which moved ahead of Missouri Western and into seventh place in the MIAA standings with 12 points. Missouri Western is hosting second-ranked Central Missouri Thursday evening.
Southwest Baptist (6-8-2, 5-7-2) lost for the fifth time in six games despite Ashley Creason netting her MIAA-leading eighth goal of the season. Kelly Isaac found Creason in the middle of the field in the fifth minute and Creason got a shot past Northwest goal keeper Kelsey Adams to take the lead.
Northwest's leading scorer Amanda Bundrant tied the contest in the 29th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Anna Calgaard was credited with her team-high fourth assist after sending a cross to Bundrant from the right side of the box. Both teams took six shots in the first half and entered the break knotted at one.
It was Northwest freshman Jordan Albright who netted her first collegiate game-winning goal. Albright sent what looked to be a harmless shot at Southwest Baptist goal keeper Megan Link in the 57th minute, but Link misplayed the ball and watched it sneak across the line. It was Albright's second goal this season.
Adams needed to make just one save in the second half to earn her second win of the season. Northwest's defense held the purple Bearcats to nine shots in all and just three in the final 45 minutes. Ashley Miller, Jacque Dedovesh and Amanda Olah played all 90 minutes on Northwest's back line while Merydeth Cummings played all but nine minutes.
The Bearcats return to host Nebraska-Omaha at 11:30 a.m. on Homecoming Saturday at Bearcat Pitch. Northwest's five seniors will be recognized prior to the game. Northwest's 2010 season will conclude next Thursday against Missouri Southern in Joplin.
