Washburn nets winner in double overtime
Washburn sophomore forward Tia Stovall assisted on the Lady Blues' first goal and scored the winner in double overtime to top Northwest Missouri State, 2-1, in a wet and wild contest on Bearcat Pitch.
The two teams battled win gusts of nearly 25 miles per hour and a steady, sometimes hard rain for more than two hours. Puddles on the field stopped numerous passes and shots in their tracks. Both teams had numerous open looks on goal only to see the ball slip off the shoe and head in a different direction.
The rain nearly helped Washburn to a winner towards the end of regulation. Northwest goal keeper Kelsey Adams made a stop on a shot with 20 seconds remaining, but slid outside the top of the box while still in possession. Washburn was awarded a free kick, but didn't immediate fire while Adams was still retreating back to the net. The ensuing kick was blocked away and time expired.
Stovall had an open look at the net during the first overtime, but her shot slipped and looked more like a cross before being sent away. Washburn out-shot Northwest 5-1 during the extra time.
A turnover at midfield helped lead to the winning goal. Taylor Mayhew took advantage of a Northwest slip and fired a pass downfield to Stovall who was alone on the left side of the box. Stovall made a quick touch before drilling a shot past Adams and into the right side of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Stovall.
Leah Talley broke a scoreless tie in the 59th minute and gave Washburn the lead after beating Adams with a shot from the right side of the box. Jordan Albright tied the game in the 75th minute after dribbling to the baseline and shooting across the box and into the left side of the net. It was the first collegiate goal for Albright.
The loss drops Northwest to 1-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league play. The Bearcats are 0-2-2 in double overtime contests. Washburn pulled even in conference play at 2-2 and is 2-3-1 overall.
