Newman’s late goal bests Northwest
WICHITA, Kan.-Sade Humphrey netted the game-winning goal with 41 seconds left in double overtime to give Newman a 1-0 win against Northwest Missouri State Friday night in the season opener for both teams. It was the Jets first-ever win against the Bearcats in three tries.
Humphrey made her Jet debut after playing her first two seasons at Butler Community College. Teammate Amanda Knabe dribbled nearly half the field before feeding Humphrey, who dribbled a shot past Northwest keeper Kelsey Adams from close range into the right corner of the net.
The shot was just the third the Jets put on goal in more than 109 minutes of work. The Bearcats put half of their 12 shots on goal but Newman goal keeper Christina Farid was up to the task and earned the shutout.
Adams, a freshman from Savannah, Mo., was one of five Bearcats to play all 109 minutes. Eight Northwest players combined to take the team's 12 shots.
Next Up: Northwest hosts Northeastern State (1-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday in the home opener for the Bearcats. The RiverHawks beat Missouri Southern 1-0 in their opener.
