Standout GK Lazenby to Join Seattle Sounders Women
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State senior Kira Lazenby has agreed to join the Seattle Sounders Women, a member of the United Soccer Leagues W-League, upon graduation from Northwest in May.
The W-League is the second highest level of professional women's soccer in the United States behind Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). Under the guidance of head coach Teddy Mitalas, the Sounders have advanced to the national final four three times in the last four seasons.
"Playing professional soccer has been a dream and a goal of mine since I was a little girl," said Lazenby. "I am more than excited to have this opportunity and experience."
Lazenby was named the top goalkeeper in the MIAA this past season after helping the Bearcats to 11 wins for the first time in program history. In two seasons, spanning 39 games, Lazenby posted 16 shutouts, a .838 save percentage and a 0.95 goals against average - all Northwest records. She scored a goal off a free kick in the final game of both seasons and assisted on another during the 2009 season.
Lazenby spent the holiday break putting a highlight tape together and sent information to a number of teams. She received numerous replies, but the Sounders stood out most.
"I had some friends who told me of their experiences on the team which was helpful in my decision," said Lazenby. "After talking with coach Mitalas, I decided that this team would be the best for me and my career in soccer."
The 2010 Seattle Sounders schedule includes contests on April 28 and May 2. Lazenby hopes to be ready for the team's home contest May 6.
Update (May 27): Teddy Mitalas has stepped down as the head coach of the Seattle Sounders and as such, Lazenby has agreed instead to sign with Santa Clarita Blue Heat FC of the United Soccer League's W-League in Santa Clarita, Calif. The team's first game is set for June 5.
