Bearcat Soccer Ties Program Record for Wins
EMPORIA, Kan.-Northwest Missouri State midfielder Heidi Sobota sent a slick ball through the hands of Emporia State goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime win Thursday at ESU Pitch.
The win is the 10th for the Bearcats (10-5-1), tying the program's single-season record set one year ago. Northwest has four games remaining and has an outside shot at reaching the NCAA tournament. The Bearcats were ranked 10th in this week's regional rankings released by the NCAA. The top six teams advance.
Northwest swept the season series with Emporia State and improved to 8-0-1 against the Lady Hornets since 2005.
A light drizzle fell for much of the contest and much to the delight of Sobota who posted her second game-winning goal of the season. The senior has three goals overall.
Andrea Tritz moved alone in second place on Northwest's all-time goals scored list after registering number 14 in the 74th minute. Sara Meidlinger was credited with the assist, her team-leading fifth of the season.
Amanda Penney game scored the equalizer six minutes later after working through a crowd in the box. It was her first goal of the season. Sobota's score came with less than four minutes left in the final overtime period.
Northwest peppered the goal for much of the contest, but couldn't get much past Schmitz. Tritz took as many shots, nine, as the entire Emporia State squad. Northwest totaled 25 shots, nine of which were on goal.
