Northwest Makes Return Trip to Washburn
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's soccer team goes for a program record-tying 10th win Saturday when the Bearcats (9-3-1, 5-3-1 MIAA) travel to Topeka to take on Washburn (7-6, 4-5). Game time from Yager Stadium is 6 p.m.
The Bearcats earned their first win since 2003 in their series with the Lady Blues last Thursday. Kelsey Sanders scored twice and the Bearcats recorded what was then their sixth shutout of the season in a 2-0 win at Bearcat Pitch. That win was followed by a 1-0 victory against Emporia State Saturday.
Northwest's Thursday match with Truman was postponed until Monday making Washburn its opponent for the second time in three games. The Bearcats have never won in Topeka (0-4-2). The Lady Blues moved to the football field and its FieldTurf surface in 2006.
Northwest is currently tied with Central Missouri for third place in the MIAA standings. Washburn, following its 2-1 win against Emporia State Thursday, stands four points behind in fifth place. The Bearcats have placed sixth in the league in each of the previous four seasons.
Leah Talley scored one of the goals against Emporia State and leads Washburn with six scores on the season. Talley, who traditionally comes off the bench, was limited to three shots, one on goal, by the Bearcats last Thursday.
Northwest welcomed back leading scorer Andrea Tritz to the lineup last week and the senior responded with the gamewinner against Emporia State. Tritz has five goals this season and 13 for her career, the second-highest total in program history.
