Truman Hands Northwest First Setback
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest junior Heidi Sobota scored her first goal as a Bearcat, but it was two goals from Truman that netted a 2-1 win for the Bulldogs Thursday at Bearcat Pitch in the MIAA opener for both teams. The loss ends a six-game Northwest win streak dating back to last season.
Katie Reuck's goal in the 79th minute broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the gamewinner. Beth Bystrom lifted a pass over the Northwest defense and Reuck fired a shot into the right side of the goal. It was Reuck's second score this season.
Kelsey Twellman lifted a shot over Northwest goalkeeper Kira Lazenby less than six minutes into the contest that gave Truman its first lead of the day. Sobota answered for Northwest 10 minutes later by drilling a free kick just outside the top of the box into the upper left-hand corner of the net. Bulldog keeper Jayne Grisham had no chance to make a play.
Northwest's best chance to take a lead came early in the second half when Kelsey Sanders sent an open look just high of the bar. Andrea Freeman had a header miss slightly right of the post minutes later.
Lazenby faced a season-high 21 shots and made nine saves. She got a finger tip on a header midway through the second half that prevented a goal. She almost scored off a free kick near the end of the first half. Grisham had six saves to earn the win for Truman.
