Northwest Hosts Truman Today in MIAA Opener
Maryville, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's soccer team puts its undefeated record up against MIAA-power Truman (1-1-2) today in a 4 p.m. match at Bearcat Pitch. It's the conference opener for both teams.
The Bearcats are off to a 4-0 start for the second year in a row and so far defense has been the key. Northwest has outscored its opponents 6-1, allowing a second-half goal to St. Mary's last time out. The Bearcats haven't trailed in a match in their last six games dating back to last season - five of which were shutouts.
Truman has been the team to beat ever since the league was formed in 1999. The Bulldogs have won eight of the 10 conference titles in that span. Although Central Missouri took the crown last year, it was Truman that advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
The Bulldogs were 17-4-2 in 2007. They return seven starters, six of which earned All-MIAA honors a year ago.
Northwest has never beat Truman (0-16), but last year's matches were tightly contested. The Bearcats led 1-0 and 2-1 in their meeting in Maryville, but Truman ultimately prevailed 3-2. Northwest is 9-2-1 at Bearcat Pitch since the start of the 2008 season.
Six different Bearcats have registered the six Northwest goals. Northwest led the MIAA in shots per game during the non-conference slate (13.5) and also shutouts with three. Kira Lazenby has minded the net all four games and has made 13 saves. The Bearcat defense has allowed 14 shots on goal all season.
