Soccer Pitches A Third Shutout
TAHLEQUAH, Okla.-Northwest Missouri State got second-half goals from Andrea Freeman and Ashley Blanchard to help lift the Bearcats to a 2-0 win against Northeastern State Thursday at the RiverHawks Soccer Complex. It's the third straight shutout for Northwest this season and fifth straight dating back to the end of last season.
Goalkeeper Kira Lazenby stopped five shots to record her program-record 11th shutout. Lazenby and the Bearcat defense haven't allowed a goal in the more than 460 minutes dating back to 2008.
Freeman broke the tie with a 20-yard blast that beat RiverHawk keeper P.J. Davis. It was the fourth career goal for the junior midfielder. Andrea Tritz was credited with the assist. Blanchard netted her first collegiate goal on a cross from Shannon FitzGerald in the 78th minute to push the lead to two.
It was more than enough for Northwest's defense, which limited Northeastern State to seven shots.
Northwest has won its first three games for the second consecutive season. The Bearcats go for four in a row Saturday against St. Mary's in San Antonio, Texas.
