Bearcats Win Classic with Victory Against Newman
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Andrea Tritz scored in the 72nd minute and Kira Lazenby recorded her program-record 10th career shutout as Northwest Missouri State topped Newman 1-0 in the championship game of the Bearcat Classic Sunday at Bearcat Pitch.
Lazenby, a senior, made six saves Sunday and needed 21 games in a Bearcat uniform to surpass the previous shutout record held by Kathie Leach (1999-2001). Lazenby has allowed 17 goals in those 21 games and has 100 saves as a Bearcat.
Tritz became the first player in program history to net five game-winning goals. Kelsey Sanders fed Tritz with a pass near midfield. Tritz beat her defender to the goal and dribbled close to Newman keeper Christina Farid before sending it to the back of the net.
Farid made a diving save on a shot by Tritz in the first half. Amanda Olah also had a good look in the first, but her attempt went just high of the bar. Farid finished with five saves.
The Bearcats out shot the Jets 15-8 and didn't allow a corner kick in the contest. Middle defender Jessica Braun played all 191 minutes during the tournament in aiding Northwest post back-to-back shutouts.
