Soccer Season Wraps Up Saturday
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State hosts Southwest Baptist Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bearcat Pitch in what is likely to be the final game of the 2008 season for both teams. Southwest Baptist won the first Battle of the Bearcats 1-0 in Bolivar back in September.
The green Bearcats (9-8-2, 5-8-2 MIAA) are coming off a dramatic 1-0 upset of sixth-ranked Central Missouri Thursday at home in a game in which Northwest tied the program's single-season wins record.
Kelsey Sanders knocked in the game winner with less than eight minutes left in regulation and gave the Bearcats their second win against a top-10 team this season. Sanders netted the winning goal in a 2-1 decision against then-No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha back on Oct. 4.
The purple Bearcats (9-5-3, 8-5-2) were 6-0 at one point, but have three wins in their last 11 games. Freshmen Rhiane Mitchell and Nicola Cousins are tied for the MIAA lead with 15 goals each. All but three of Mitchell's goals and all but five of Cousins' came in Southwest Baptist's first six games.
Cousins had the lone goal in the first game between the two teams. Southwest Baptist out shot Northwest 20-15 in that contest, but the green Bearcats put more shots on goal (7-5).
A win Saturday and Northwest will turn its first winning season in program history (inaugural year was 1999). The Bearcats' 2006 squad finished 9-9-1.
Northwest's leading scorer Andrea Tritz played 26 minutes Thursday due to an injury, but is expected to be in the lineup Saturday for the finale. Should she net a goal against Southwest Baptist, she will set a new program mark for goals scored in a season with nine.
