Tritz's Corner Lifts Bearcats Past Hornets
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State forward Andrea Tritz recorded the fastest goal in program history as the Bearcats (8-6-2, 4-6-2 MIAA) topped Emporia State (3-11-1, 1-9-1) 1-0 on the marsh that was Bearcat Pitch Thursday.
Tritz spun a cornerkick through the hands of Hornet goalkeeper Jennifer Stillmock 1 minute, 56 seconds into the contest. It was Tritz's seventh goal of the season, leaving her one shy of the Bearcats' single-season record. It was also the first corner-kick goal scored by Northwest this season.
Maryville received three inches of rain Wednesday, making the Pitch nearly unplayable. A light rain began to fall near the end of the first half and continued into much of the second.
The wet conditions couldn't prevent the Bearcats from nearly doubling their season-high for corner kicks. Northwest took 15 against Emporia and had several near misses that would've given the Bearcats a two-goal lead.
Northwest's second corner came in the ninth minute and Tritz sent a beauty to the far side of the box. Holly Ramaeker was there, but sent a header just high of the bar. Abby Hobgood and Sara Meidlinger had two looks off corners, but Stillmock saved both to keep her team within one.
Emporia had its best opportunity to score in the opening minutes. On the possession that followed Tritz's goal, Lauren Cathey had an open look on the left side of the box but nailed the cross bar. The rebound was sent to the right side where Alicia Smith fired and drilled a Northwest defender before the ball was cleared.
Tritz nearly tied the record in the second half. She had an open look from 25-yards out and sent a lob over Stillmock which clipped the bar and was rebounded by the Hornets.
Stillmock finished with six saves while her counterpart, Kira Lazenby, posted four. Lazenby extended her school record for shutouts in a single-season to six. She's allowed 14 goals in 15 starts this season (0.92 GAA).
