Seesaw Match Goes To Truman
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Northwest Missouri State's and Truman's top two goal scorers each scored their sixth goal of the season, but it was Katie Reuck's seventh that was the difference in a 3-2 Truman win Thursday at Bearcat Pitch.
Northwest (7-5-2, 3-5-2 MIAA) held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but couldn't hold off the 25th-ranked Bulldogs (10-3-1, 6-2-1). Truman is just the second team this season to score three goals against the Bearcats.
The turning point of the contest came in the 72nd minute when Northwest midfielder Sara Meidlinger drew a red card, forcing the Bearcats to play a woman down the rest of the way. Meidlinger was called for a foul near midfield and lay injured while the referee put the ball back in play. Meidlinger voiced her frustration while still laying on the ground and drew the card.
Truman had tied the game at 2-2 five minutes prior to the card and scored the game winner four minutes later. Reuck drove the left baseline, sent a ball into the middle of the box that was deflected off a Northwest player and into the net. It was her fourth game-winning goal of the season.
Northwest got its goals from Andrea Tritz and Holly Ramaeker. Tritz drilled a shot from 30 yards out that laced the back of the net for the first score of the game.
Tritz also helped the Bearcats score their second goal. She was tripped up from behind in the box while working a 1-on-1 with Truman goalkeeper Denise Childress and drew a penalty kick six minutes into the second half.
Ramaeker, who was 2-for-2 on penalty kicks this season, fired right at Childress, who dropped to a knee to stop the shot. The rebound came right back to Ramaeker, who fired a second time and scored.
Northwest held its second lead for 16 minutes before Riley Mahn's header tied the game at two. Megan Buri sent a free kick into the middle of the box and Mahn got just enough of the ball to send it bouncing towards the net and into the goal.
Truman out shot the Bearcats 21-13 and prevented Northwest from taking a corner kick. Kira Lazenby stopped seven of Truman's 10 shots on goal. Childress finished with three saves.
