Northwest Defeats First Ranked Opponent of Season
MARYVILLE, Mo. - Northwest scored in the 69th minute after Kelsey Sanders drove down the sideline for an unassisted goal and the Northwest defense held to preserve the 2-1 upset of No. 4 Nebraska-Omaha today at Bearcat Pitch. It's the first win against a top five opponent and against the Mavericks in program history.
Northwest scored first off a goal from Rikki Southard, who used the only corner kick of the half from Andrea Tritz and a pass from Amanda Deml for her first goal of the season. The Mavericks evened the score off a penalty kick from Megan Jensen in the 33th minute in the final score before halftime.
Sanders recorded her second goal of the season for the only goal of the second half. The Mavericks had six corner kick opportunities in the final 45 minutes, but the Bearcat defense held Nebraska-Omaha at bay as Kira Lazenby made three saves in the half.
Tritz led Northwest with three shots, moving into a tied in season records. Deml's assist moves her into a tie for second in career records with her seventh.
Up Next: The Bearcats head to Washburn Oct. 9 for a 7 p.m. game from Yager Stadium.
