KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—Truman midfielder Megan Buri’s first goal of the season came at the 10-minute mark of the second half and was the difference in a 2-1 decision against Northwest Missouri State Thursday in the MIAA opener for both teams.
The Bulldogs (5-0, 1-0 MIAA), who have won eight of the nine conference championships, improved to 15-0 all-time against the Bearcats (4-1, 0-1).
The teams exchanged goals midway through the first half. Jessica Wiegert broke free and beat Northwest goalkeeper Kira Lazenby on a breakaway to give Truman a 1-0 lead 23 minutes into the game. It was the third goal of the season for Wiegert.
Northwest answered less than three minutes later with an unassisted goal from junior Sara Meidlinger, her first as a Bearcat. Meidlinger fired a shot over Denise Childress and into the top left corner of the net. It’s just the second goal given up by Truman this season.
Both team’s offenses exchanged rallies in the first half, but Truman controlled the game for much of the second. After firing seven shots in the first half, Northwest mustered just two in the second. The final shot by either team came with more than 15 minutes left in the second half.
Buri’s game-winner slid past Lazenby and into the left side of the net. Katie Reuck and Riley Mahn were credited with assists.
Lazenby finished with a season-best six saves and Childress had three for Truman. The two teams are scheduled to meet again Oct. 16 in Maryville.
Next Up: Northwest will attempt to pull even in conference play Saturday night at rival Missouri Western in St. Joseph. Game time is 7 p.m.
