Bearcats Down Northeastern St.; Improve to 3-0
MARYVILLE, Mo.-Andrea Tritz scored her third and fourth goals of the season to help lead Northwest Missouri State to a 2-0 win against Northeastern State (1-1) Friday at Bearcat Pitch. The Bearcats are 3-0 to start a season for the first time in program history and have won a team-record four games in a row dating back to last season.
Tritz found herself wide open at the top of the box after receiving a pass from Sara Meidlinger and flipped a shot over RiverHawk goalkeeper Patricia Nardy to give Northwest a lead eight minutes into the contest.
The Bearcats dominated possession for much of the first half and went into the break with a one-goal lead.
The momentum slowly shifted in the second half and the RiverHawks nearly recorded the equalizer in the 67th minute, but Bearcat goalkeeper Kira Lazenby dove and made a two-handed catch to her right on a close-range shot by Hannah Struck.
Lazenby made a similar save on Struck towards the middle of the first half and finished with three stops in recording her third shutout of the season.
Tritz scored her second goal in the 80th minute. She juked a defender on a breakaway and lifted a shot over Nardy from 20 yards out to seal the win. Tritz has scored in all three games this season.
The Bearcats outshot the RiverHawks 23-8 and atoned for a 3-1 loss at Northeastern State a year ago. Northwest continues play at the Bearcat Classic Sunday against Wayne State College.
