MIAA Soccer Coaches Poll Released

KANSAS CITY, Mo.-NCAA quarterfinalist and league newcomer Nebraska-Omaha has been selected as the team to beat in the 2008 MIAA women's soccer season, according to the coaches preseason poll. Northwest Missouri State, which placed sixth in the 2007 standings, is picked to finish seventh.

The Bearcats return seven starters from a team that finished 5-8-1 in league play and 6-11-1 overall. Senior Amanda Deml returns as the team's leading scorer. Senior Lauren Hodgson returns as goalkeeper.

Nebraska-Omaha garnered four of nine first-place votes and totaled 60 points. Defending MIAA co-champions Central Missouri and Truman were separated by one point for second and third, respectively. Truman has won eight of the nine MIAA titles.

New in 2007, the postseason conference tournament has been discontinued in 2008 to allow flexibility in scheduling the double round-robin regular season slate. The team or teams with the best regular-season record will be declared MIAA champions.

The MIAA will compete in the South Central Region along with the Lone Star Conference and Heartland Conference in 2008. The Bearcats open their season Aug. 30 against Southwestern Oklahoma State in Wichita, Kan. Northwest opens at home Sept. 5 against Northeastern State.
