Bearcats Open MIAA Schedule This WeekendMARYVLLE - ( Game Notes) Northwest Missouri State soccer travels south this weekend to open its MIAA schedule. Northwest begins at Southwest Baptist on Sept. 14 at 4 p.m., followed by unbeaten Missouri Southern on Sept. 15 at 4 p.m.
The Bearcats fell 3-1 to Northeastern (Okla.) State on Sept. 9. Freshman Hannah Barnett scored her first career goal in the 44th minute, providing the Bearcats a 1-0 lead at half. The RiverHawks scored three goals in the second half for the 3-1 victory.
Junior Amanda Deml entered Northwest career top 10 charts with her fourth career assist against Northeastern State. She stands tied for 10th with junior Holly Ramaeker. Deml's two assists this season is one short of tying for eighth in school season charts. She also needs two shots to tie for 10th in career shot records. Deml leads the MIAA in assists per game, averaging 0.67 this season.
Southwest Baptist (1-3-1, 0-1 MIAA) suffered its first MIAA loss to Missouri Southern on Aug. 31, allowing a goal in the fifth minute in the 1-0 loss. The Lady Bearcats secured their only win of the season in the season opener on Aug. 24 at Texas Woman's University, scoring twice in the first half for the 2-1 win. Through four games this season, the Lady Bearcats only have two athletes with 10 or more shots in Dominie Emmanuel and Amber Vasquez.
Northwest faces its first regionally ranked opponent this weekend in Missouri Southern. The Lions (4-0-1, 1-0 MIAA) are tied for No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas Central Region rankings released Sept. 11, carrying a 9-0-1 record at Hal Boden Field since Aug. 27, 2006. Junior midfielder Nikki Llewellyn leads the MIAA in shots (5.80 avg.) and is second in points (2.20), goals (1.00) and shots on goal (2.4). She picked up MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 27, after scoring three goals and recording an assist in games against Delta (Miss.) State and Harding (Ark.). Goalkeeper Kaney Tyler received MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors for her performance in the same two games.
The Bearcats will return home next week to begin a five-game home stretch at Bearcat Pitch. The home stretch begins on Sept. 18, hosting Wayne (Neb.) State in a 4 p.m. game. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 2, but was postponed because of a contagious skin condition among Wildcat players.
